In many parts of Asia, there are many different superstitions and folktales that shape their culture and beliefs. When visiting some parts of Asia, it is important to be aware of superstitions that they believe in their country so you follow them.

China

One of the most well known superstitions/beliefs is that the number 4 is considered unlucky. Four (四/sì) is unlucky in China because it sounds like the word for death (死/sǐ), however, eight (八) is considered to bring good fortune. Another superstition is that clipping your fingernails or toenails at night is an invitation for ghosts.

Thailand

A superstition in Thailand is that you shouldn't get a haircut on Wednesday. This superstition is so popular that most hair salons in Thailand are closed on Wednesday. Another superstition is that if you call a newborn baby “cute”, it will be taken away by a ghost.

India

A popular Indian superstitious belief is that if you see a black cat crossing the road, it symbolizes bad luck and can delay your tasks and routines for that day. Another superstition is that you can ward off evil through hanging chilis and lemon on the doorway of your house.

Pakistan

India and Pakistan are tied together when it comes to superstitions. Some overlap and are the same in both countries. If your palms are itchy, then it means money is coming in your near future. Additionally, if you sneeze, it means someone is missing you.

Japan

A Japanese superstition is that breaking a comb or the teeth of a comb can bring bad luck and misfortune. Another one is that sleeping while facing north is considered bad luck. This is because at funerals in Japan, the bodies are faced north.

Vietnam

A superstition in Vietnam is that pregnant women should not attend weddings during their pregnancy because it is considered bad luck for the couple getting married. Another one is that the first visitor of the year indicates the luck for the rest of the year.
